Lung Nodule Evaluation Clinic
Patient information
Lung Nodules
A lung nodule is a small spot found on the lungs by a CT scan or chest radiograph.
Lung nodules can be found when a CT scan is performed:
- To investigate symptoms such as cough or shortness of breath
- As part of the National Lung Cancer Screening Programme (NLCSP)
- To follow up someone with a treated cancer
- For other reasons (“incidental” nodules)
Many lung nodules are benign (no cancer) and may have been present for years. However, some times a lung nodules is an early lung cancer. Finding and treating lung cancer at an early stage gives the best chance of cure.
Depending on their appearance, some nodules may not require any follow up. Other nodules may be safely monitored by your GP with another CT scan.
We accept referrals for patients with high-risk nodules that need specialist review. If you are referred to this clinic, you may need to undergo further testing with a more detailed CT scan, a PET scan or lung function (breathing) testing.
The National Lung Cancer Screening Program
Starting from 1st July 2025, eligible Australians aged 50-70 will be able to undergo a free low dose CT scan of the chest every 2 years.
These scans are painless, take 5-10 minutes while lying flat and do not need any injections.
Up to one quarter of screening CT scans will find a lung nodule. If a lung nodule is found, shorter interval follow-up scans may be required or in some cases, referral to a Respiratory Specialist in a Lung Nodule Clinic.
Screening CT scans may also find abnormalities in other parts of the body, including other lung or heart conditions, or changes in the kidneys, liver, adrenal glands or bones. If an abnormality is found, this information will be given to your GP who will talk to you about what to do next.
