Vascular Malformations (Vascular Anomalies) Clinic
Health professional information
Clinical service overview
The Alfred Vascular Malformation (Vascular Anomalies) Clinic in Melbourne is suitable for patients who have been diagnosed with vascular malformations, including arterial, venous and lymphatic anomalies, sometimes referred to as “high-flow” or “low-flow” vascular malformations.
The clinic is run by a group of experienced and credentialed interventional radiologists, with advanced training in the management of vascular malformations including sclerotherapy and embolisation, led by Dr Tuan Phan.
After referral to the vascular malformations clinic, your patient will be seen and assessed by an interventional radiologist who relay their recommendation and treatment plan back to you via a letter. Some vascular malformations will require multidisciplinary treatment involving other medical, surgical and/or neurointerventional specialists, and we will arrange this multidisciplinary care as appropriate. The Alfred Interventional Radiology team will provide longitudinal care for your patient before, during and after treatment. We will organise ongoing follow up and are available for ongoing consultation.
How do we treat vascular malformations?
The Interventional Radiologists at the Alfred performed minimally invasive, ultrasound and x-ray, guided treatment such as sclerotherapy and embolization. These procedures are usually performed as day procedures and are typically performed under general anaesthetic or deep sedation led by an anaesthetist.
What is Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy refers to direct injection of a sclerosing liquid medication into the vascular malformation under image guidance. The medication causes irritation to the inside of the abnormal vessels resulting in the vessels collapsing over time.
What is Embolisation
Embolisation involves endovascular occlusion of specific blood vessels, reducing or stopping blood flow to the vascular anomaly. This is usually done through a “key-hole” or “pin-hole” surgery with a small tube advanced into the specific vessel.

MBS-billed service
On the doctor’s behalf, Alfred Health can bulk bill the cost of the consultation for some services through Medicare. This means there is no out of pocket expense to the patient.
MBS-billed services require a current referral. Provide your patient with a 12 month referral to see the specialist of your choice at the requested clinic.
Referrals must be addressed to a named specialist or the Head of service, listed at the top of this page. Clinic consultants are listed on every clinic page.
Note that from time to time, your patient may be seen by another specialist in the clinic, in order to expedite their treatment.
