Emergency Research Unit

The Emergency Research Unit (ERU) operates across Alfred Health Emergency (AHE) and the Monash University School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (SPHPM).

AHE is made up of two emergency departments: The Alfred Emergency and Trauma Centre (E&TC), and the Sandringham Hospital Emergency Department (SH ED).

The Alfred E&TC is a tertiary referral centre and one of the state’s busiest emergency departments, providing timely quality care to acutely unwell and injured patients from metropolitan and regional Victoria. SH ED is community-focused, offers paediatric clinical services, and also has an integrated Urgent Care Centre in the department.

The ERU is focused on helping people avoid the need for emergency care, and to improve clinical care in pre-hospital and emergency department settings, when it cannot be avoided. Key research themes include concussion, pre-hospital care, emergency medicine, and preventive care. There is an emphasis on improving the safety and quality of emergency care delivery and patient satisfaction. Operating across AHE and SPHPM, the team integrates research expertise with access to an outstanding clinical service. This ensures research projects are grounded in real-world challenges, facilitating recruitment, and allowing the team to rapidly translate findings for both the local community and more broadly (nationally and internationally).
