The ultimate gift of life

When Olivia’s father, Paul, died at The Alfred more than seven years ago, he became an organ donor, helping save the lives of three people.

"It was an easy decision at the worst possible time," Olivia said.

"My mum and dad had already talked about organ donation, so we knew what dad wanted."

Last year, 37 families said yes to organ and tissue donation at The Alfred, resulting in 58 life-saving organ transplants and many more eye and tissue donations.

For Olivia, saying ‘yes’ reflected the values that had always guided her family.

"Our values are simple: be kind, help where you can and give what you can," she said.

"Organ donation was really an extension of who dad was."

Prof Dashiell Gantner, Medical Donation Specialist and Intensive Care Specialist at The Alfred, said donor families often find comfort in knowing their loved one's legacy continues through others.

"Organ donation is an extraordinary act of generosity," Professor Gantner said.

"At what can be a time of immense grief, many families tell us they find comfort in knowing their loved one was able to help others, and there’s hope that comes from that.”

For Olivia, that sense of hope has been an important part of living with the loss of her father.

"From my dad's death came something good," she said.

“I feel so proud that because of my dad, three people have been given a second chance at life.”

Alfred specialists were joined by Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon. Rebecca White MP, Olivia and her mother Gail, two transplant recipients and Organ and Tissue Authority Chief Executive Lucinda Barry AM to officially launch DonateLife Week 2026.

“This week is an important reminder to discuss your donation wishes with loved ones,” said Prof Gantner.

"Having a conversation with your family can make all the difference if they are ever asked to make a decision on your behalf," he said.
