The Alfred has once again been recognised among the world’s leading hospitals, earning a place in Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2026 rankings.

For the first time, The Alfred has been ranked in the global top 50, making it the highest‑ranked hospital in Australia on the list.

Bayside Health Alfred chief executive Adjunct Professor Simone Alexander said the recognition reflects the dedication, skill and continual innovation of staff who work around the clock to deliver outstanding patient care, alongside those advancing clinical research.

“This acknowledgement is just one measure of the quality of public healthcare our community can access, but it reflects our ongoing commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of our patients,” Adj Prof Alexander said.

“Every day, our teams bring their passion and innovation to work. They do this for our patients, for one another, and because helping others matters deeply to them.”

The ranking also recognises the work of staff to capture and measure the experience of patients, including their quality of life and functional outcomes before and after care. This helps to drive continuous improvement in treatment and recovery.

The Alfred is proud to stand alongside the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, which were also recognised in the list’s top 100, as well as the other Australian hospitals named.
