Morning tea and bright colours to mark IDAHOBIT

17 May 2025

The Alfred’s ICU staff are gathering to highlight understanding and compassionate care as part of International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

Staff will wear bright colours and bring a plate of food to share, as part of a morning tea organised by The Alfred’s ICU Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) group.

Held on Saturday 17 May, IDAHOBIT raises awareness of the discrimination faced by LGBTQIA+ people. It promotes inclusion, respect, and equity; regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.

While progress has been made, Associate Nurse Unit Manager Penny said it was important to continue raising awareness of discrimination faced by LGBTQIA+ people.

“Progress is not permanent unless we actively protect it,” Penny said.

“Discrimination still exists. Equality benefits everyone, and raising awareness ensures that no one is left behind.”

Clinical Nurse Specialist Brydie said when people feel seen, outcomes improve—both clinically and culturally.

“It sets a standard of dignity that should be non-negotiable in healthcare," Brydie said.

The Alfred’s ICU EDI group said the morning tea is just one of a range of activities they coordinate to provide a safe and respectful environment, from celebrating key cultural days to providing EDI champions for patients with unique needs.

“We are proud to work alongside a team rich in cultural backgrounds, gender identities, and lived experiences,” Penny said.

“This diversity fosters empathy and allows us to connect more deeply with patients and with one another.”

Associate Nurse Unit Manager Emily said each event is designed to remind and encourage all staff to play their part in creating a more respectful workplace.

“It starts with curiosity and a willingness to learn—knowledge builds empathy. Reading shared stories, engaging with resources, and reflecting on our own biases,” Emily said.
