Critial care echocardiography (Wednesday 21 & Thursday 22 November)

Vital questions that echocardiography can help you to answer include:

  • Why is my patient hypotensive – Is there evidence of cardiac tamponade or ischaemia?
  • Why can’t I wean my patient off the ventilator - Is cardiac dysfunction contributing?
  • What’s the volume status - Is my patient still underfilled?

The Alfred ICU runs a two day course on critical care echocardiography. The emphasis is on:

  • Practical (TTE) echo skills acquisition – 2:1 participant: instructor ratio
  • Interpreting echo data in the context of critical care scenarios
  • Developing reporting skills. Assisting preparation for formal echocardiography qualifications

Critical care ultrasound (Friday 23 November)

One of the major advances in critical care medicine in the last decade has been the explosion in point-of-care ultrasound technology. Utilising ultrasound on our patients at the bedside improves patient care and adds to safety and efficacy of diagnosis and procedures in the critically ill patient. Today, ultrasound guided procedures and diagnosis is becoming the standard of care.
