We are committed to maximising the health and wellbeing of the population by improving public nutrition.
To increase the availability of healthy food and drink options within our hospitals, we worked closely with onsite retailers to:
- improve the healthiness of food options
- review contractual obligations of suppliers
- engage a panel of providers to meet event catering requirements
- undertake a range of trials in onsite retail outlets
What we've done
Alfred Health was recognised as one of the first health services to comprehensively implement the Victorian Government’s Healthy choices: food and drink guidelines for Victorian public hospitals across its retail, vending and catering services.
Alfred Health undertook an innovative trial involving labelling food choices available for purchase by their traffic light ‘health’ rating, along with accompanying ‘nudge’ lines to encourage people to make the healthier choice.
Four behavioural insights trials were implemented at Alfred Health to investigate whether relatively small changes in the placement and price of beverages would impact consumer choice and retail profit.
We investigated whether changes to the placement of fried food would nudge people towards healthier options.
We looked at the effect of loyalty cards in our main cafe to investigate if they would encourage people to make healthier food choices.
