The Alfred's Cardiothoracic unit is known for its expertise in managing complex cardiac and thoracic conditions.
The Alfred Cardiothoracic team provides a broad range of highly specialised procedures including cardiac (heart) and pulmonary (lung) transplantation, providing services to patients living in metropolitan Melbourne, regional Victoria, and interstate.
We also have a strong research focus, particularly in improving outcomes in heart and lung transplantation and developing new surgical techniques.

Prof Silvana Marasco is the Director, Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Alfred and Professor, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Monash University.

Associate Professor Chris Merry completed his undergraduate degree at Melbourne University and underwent postgraduate training at St Vincent’s Hospital, The Alfred and Austin Hospital. He undertook an aortic surgery fellowship at the Austin Hospital and has worked as a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon since 2008.

Mr Adam Zimmet is a Cardiothoracic & Transplantation Surgeon who has worked at The Alfred for over 15 years.
Julian Gooi is a Cardiothoracic and Transplant surgeon working at The Alfred in Victoria, Australia. He has a more than 15 years’ experience in Cardiothoracic and Transplant surgery and is one of the lead surgeons in the Paediatric lung transplant service.
Mr Justin Negri is a Cardiothoracic & Transplantation Surgeon.
