Jean-Phillipe Miller receives Florence Nightingale Medal

10 June 2025

Congratulations to Emergency Nurse Jean-Phillipe Miller, who has been awarded for his humanitarian work with the Red Cross.

Jean-Phillipe has been awarded a Florence Nightingale Medal by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) – an honour that rewards recipients who show exceptional courage and devotion to victims of armed conflict or natural disaster.

An emergency nurse at The Alfred, Jean-Phillipe is well-versed in caring for patients with acute injuries or illnesses by providing quick assessments, stabilisation and treatment – but working in a humanitarian context adds whole other levels of challenge.

“In these environments, operations can be constrained by limited resources, damaged infrastructure and security concerns,” Jean-Phillipe said.

“We’re also contending with other public health factors such as population displacement, food insecurity, disease outbreaks and inadequate water and sanitation.”

For over a decade, Jean-Phillipe has delivered critical care to people in South Sudan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Syria, Papua New Guinea, Nigeria and, more recently, in Gaza.

“This work is important to me because it aligns with my principles and ethics, and because healthcare is a basic human right,” Jean-Phillipe said.

“Providing medical care in conflict and disaster situations is vital to saving lives, reducing suffering, and restoring dignity to those affected."

One of only 35 nurses globally to receive the award, Jean-Phillipe said he was “incredibly grateful” to have his work supported and acknowledged.

“I’ve been incredibly fortunate and privileged to work alongside so many dedicated and inspiring national and international colleagues from the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, so this recognition to me is shared,” Jean-Phillipe said.

“It reflects the collective effort of those I’ve worked with in the field and beyond.”
