Ty Simpson named Nurse of the Year
We are proud to share that Ty Simpson was named HESTA Nurse of the Year recognising his outstanding contribution to the delivery and care of Chimeric Antigen Receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy to cancer patients across Australia.
Working as The Alfred's first ever CAR-T Clinical Nurse Consultant in clinical trials, Ty is a compassionate and driven clinician, who is well-respected by patients and his peers both in Australia and internationally, for his engaging approach to patient-centred care and specialist skills.
Ty cites the unwavering support of his mentors and leaders of the organisation sharing the same commitment for advancements in nursing and patient care.
“People with passion need to be managed by people with passion. I am deeply grateful to my manager (Ellen Heywood) for nominating me and to the leadership team for their support and inspiration, which motivates me to give my best every day. This award is not just a personal achievement but a celebration of the incredible work nurses do to make a difference in patient’s lives."
In addition to caring for patients, Ty has developed and delivered a range of initiatives that have helped shape nursing education and best practice. This work continues to translate to a better patient experience, particularly for patients undergoing cancer trials.
We are incredibly proud of your work Ty, and for the difference you make in the lives of patients, their loved ones and the teams you work with, at The Alfred and beyond.
"I am most proud that we now have a nurse-led group of over 120 nurses across Australia and New Zealand that get to upskill and support nurses in regional and remote communities," he said at the awards.
"This upskilling means patients have that expert care when they return home.
“Most importantly, thank you to the clinical trial participants - because without that we wouldn't have CAR-T, which is currently curing people from cancer.”
