The Alfred goes trackside at F1

6 March 2026

Everyone at emergency and radiology knows orderly Mike O’Brien loves motor racing — and not just because he dresses up come Grand Prix season.

“I’ll wear my McLaren gear to work – I have a couple of t-shirts and caps – which seems to go down well with staff and patients alike,” Mike said.

“I really get a kick out of it when a patient who might not be feeling the best sees me roll up in a papaya orange t-shirt and there’s excitement and recognition.

“It’s nice to see a smile on their face and chat about something fun without worrying about what’s going on. It’s great.”

It’s also the time of year when his interests and work come together, as Mike is working trackside as part of the team at The Grand Prix Medical Centre for the fifth year in a row.

Run by The Alfred since 1996, the team is on hand for all F1 workers – from drivers, support crews, marshals and all corporate workers.

Located just down the road from The Alfred, The Grand Prix Medical Centre is fully equipped to deliver a high level of emergency medical care, from the serious to the simple.

Over the years the team has provided emergency care for a number of high-profile crashes, but innovations in motor vehicle safety and protective equipment mean most injuries they see are considered low acuity.

Associate Nurse Manager Hayley Baker said while Mike’s role is slightly different in this context, it’s an invaluable one.

“Mike wears many hats out here at the Grand Prix,” Hayley said.

“He’s our orderly, cleaner, courier, chauffeur and patient transport officer.

“Mike ensures that the rest of the medical team are set up and ready to go when emergencies occur – from major traumas to heatstroke and dehydration, we’re well prepared.”
