Sandringham maternity comes home
Women and babies will continue to receive high-quality care at Sandringham Hospital, with maternity, newborn and gynaecology services transferring from Monash Health to Bayside Health today.
The change marks a significant shift, bringing the clinical program back to the health service that runs the hospital after a decade under external partners.
Bayside Health Chief Executive Adj Professor Adam Horsburgh said the change would strengthen integration across the service.
“This enables Bayside Health to extend the same clinical leadership, expertise and integrated support to maternity, newborn and gynaecology services that already exists across Sandringham Hospital,” Adam said.
“The change reflects our commitment to delivering integrated, high-quality care for women, babies and families right across Bayside Health.”
Clinical oversight of the service will be provided by Bayside Health’s Peninsula team, which also cares for women and newborns at Peninsula University Hospital.
Adam said staff transitioning into Bayside Health would play a key role in maintaining continuity of care.
“It is wonderful to welcome these dedicated and highly skilled women’s and newborn healthcare professionals to Bayside Health, and to continue providing this important service for our community,” he said.
All maternity, gynaecology and newborn services at Sandringham Hospital will continue as planned during the transition.
Women requiring more complex care will be supported at Peninsula University Hospital, while higher-risk pregnancies and seriously unwell newborns will transfer to Monash Health, as they always have.
Jana Gazarek, Chief Executive, Bayside Health Peninsula Care Group, said the well-established women’s and children’s team at Peninsula University Hospital is ideally placed to lead the governance of the service at Sandringham Hospital.
“We have a strong history as an innovative leader in women’s health, and look forward to working with our new colleagues to continue providing exceptional care for our growing community,” Ms Gazarek said.
Adam also acknowledged Monash Health and the Royal Women’s Hospital, which collectively oversaw the maternity service for more than 10 years.
“We thank our colleagues at Monash Health and, prior to that, the Royal Women’s Hospital, for their partnership and support of our community. Our team will now continue caring for women and families while building on the service as part of Bayside Health,” he said.
