Clinical electrophysiology research

The Electrophysiology research group, headed by Professor Peter Kistler, are international leaders in the latest causes and treatments for heart rhythm disorders.

The group closely collaborates with teams across the country and internationally in the USA, UK and Canada to complete clinical trials furthering our understanding and treatments for heart rhythm disorders, in particular atrial fibrillation (AF).

Research focus

At the Alfred, we pioneered the role of catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation in heart failure leading to a paradigm shift in the management of these common conditions. We published the first trial exploring the role of alcohol in atrial fibrillation in the New England Journal. We are at the forefront of understanding the mechanisms responsible for heart rhythm disorders tailoring ablation strategies accordingly.

Current trials open to enrolments

The Yoga-AF study is a world-first randomised trial exploring the role of yoga in heart disease, in this case, AF.

The Endure-AF study compares two different approaches to AF ablation techniques in people who require a redo AF ablation procedure for recurrent AF.

Other trials examine outcomes of AF ablation in patients with enduring pulmonary vein isolation and patterns of pulmonary vein reconnection in the era of pulsed field ablation (PFA).

Commercially sponsored trials, ReMATCH and CathRx Electropulse evaluate the effectiveness of catheters for PFA.

A/Prof Sandeep Prabhu has ongoing studies in the role of catheter ablation and heart failure. A/Prof Alex Voskoboinik is exploring the most effective strategies for patients with recurrent loss of consciousness (SYNCOPE STOPPER) and improving outcomes in cardiac arrest. We have ongoing studies pioneering approaches and technologies in catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation.
