Update on gum tree at Sandringham Hospital

The lemon-scented gum tree on the corner of Edward Street at Sandringham Hospital will be professionally pruned and monitored for the next 12-months.
While the maintenance program means the tree will be retained at this time, independent arborists and both Alfred Health and Bayside City Council agree that the tree’s health is declining and will eventually need to be replaced.
A spokesperson for Alfred Health said resident and Council interest reflects the passion the community has for the local environment, as does the health service.
“The safety of our community must continue to come first, so the tree will be professionally pruned and permanent fencing installed by Alfred Health and the Council. This will create a larger isolation zone beneath the tree’s canopy.”
The tree’s health and resulting safety risk will be frequently reviewed by an arborist over the coming year. If there is further limb failure at any time the tree will need to be replaced.
