Pain Management
The Caulfield Pain Management and Research Centre provides specialist assessment and treatment for people with chronic pain.
What we do
We aim to assist people by reducing the impact of persistent pain by optimising pain treatments, improving function and promoting self-management.
This is achieved by expert assessment, education and access to a number of treatment modalities.
We offer the following services for patients:
- medical management
- assessment and advice and recommendations for ongoing treatment
- case-management
- multidisciplinary pain management programmes
- functional and physical programmes
- clinical psychology
- Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)
- interventional procedures (anaesthetic blocks)
- centre for assessment of patients for Spinal Implant Surgery
We also offer the following programs:
- SMART (Self Management and Resource Tools)
- physiotherapy/occupational therapy group (Startup)
- CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) Pain Management Group programs
- follow up Group Programs
- modules – Feldenkrais, Tai Chi, Stress, Sleep, Hydrotherapy
- individual management
Who we care for
We provide treatment for adults with chronic non-malignant pain and cancer survivors with chronic pain.
What to expect
Following a referral:
- you will receive a questionnaire that needs to be returned before your referral is accepted
- once we receive your questionnaires you will be invited to an education session (SMART or Medication Management)
- after this you will be invited to a an individual medical appointment. This may be followed by allied health assessments depending on the discussions you have with the treating doctor
- a letter and / or report is sent out to the GP and or your referring doctor at completion of the initial appointment. You will also receive a copy of the allied health assessment report
How to access this service

Caulfield Access is responsible for intake, information and referral processing for a wide range of community and ambulatory services.
Family, carers, case managers and patients can contact Caulfield Access to access our services.
Once a referral has been received, a Care Coordinator will phone the patient to discuss their needs and organise appropriate services. The Care Coordinator will provide the patient with their phone number. Patients are encouraged to contact the Care Coordinator if they have any concerns.

What to bring
Every time you come
- Medicare card
- Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
- Private health insurance card (if applicable/if you want to use it)
- Adverse drug alert card (if you have one)
- Previous x-ray films, scans, ultrasounds or any other test results or reports
- Medicines you need to take while you are here
- List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes), including medicines you have bought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
- Glasses, hearing aid, walking frame
For a clinic appointment
- Your appointment letter
- Any special items listed on your letter
- TAC or Workcover claim number (if relevant)
