Prof Stephen Duffy MBBS PhD FRACP MRCP FCSANZ
Prof Stephen J Duffy is a practising interventional cardiologist at The Alfred.
Professor Duffy leads The Alfred's General Cardiology services and is an Adjunct Professor, Department of Epidemiology and Preventative Medicine, Monash University. His PhD and post-doctoral clinical research focused on endothelial function and oxidative stress, but his present research interests include cardiac structural and coronary interventional trials, clinical outcome registries, identification and evaluation of biomarkers for unstable ischaemic heart disease, reduction of reperfusion injury following myocardial infarction, and anti-atherosclerotic effects of HDL.
Professor Duffy’s clinical interests include transcatheter treatment of structural heart disease, interventional cardiology (particularly percutaneous treatment of coronary artery disease) and management of acute coronary syndromes. Associate Professor Tony Walton and Professor Duffy established the first transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) programme in the state of Victoria and have been treating patients with this technology for ten years. Professors Duffy and Walton have also established a programme for percutaneous treatment of mitral valve disease with transcatheter mitral valve implantation or repair.
Professor Duffy is a Fellow of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand; with regular scientific contributions and invited presentations at their annual scientific meetings since 1996. He is an active Fellow of the RACP and a Member of the RCP, UK. He is the elected Victorian representative on the CSANZ Board (since 2015). He is a foundation member and is on the Steering Committee of the Melbourne Interventional Group, a large collaborative research group of cardiologists focusing on percutaneous coronary revascularization outcomes (>30,000 cases; almost 50 publications). He is also on the Steering Committee, the Clinical Quality Committee, and the Data Access, Research & Publications Committee of the Victorian Cardiac Outcomes Registry (>45,000 cases). He was Chairman of both the Alfred Hospital Research Review Committee (2003–2005) and the Health and Social Science Ethics Committee (2007–2009).
Professor Duffy has been an invited reviewer of numerous higher degree theses (including PhD/MD). He has supervised numerous FRACP basic and advanced trainees, as well as four PhD students to completion. He has been an invited chair of oral abstract presentations at the AHA Scientific Sessions and the CSANZ ASM. He is a regular invited reviewer of manuscripts for numerous high-impact journals, including Circulation and The Lancet and has been an Editorial Consultant, for The Lancet from 2005 to the present time. He has over 100 peer-reviewed, original research publications, including in top clinical (The Lancet) and specialist journals (Circulation; Journal of the American College of Cardiology). His publications have high citation rates with 1 publication cited >500 times, along with 21 others cited more than 100 times. His H-index is 33.
Outside of medicine Professor Duffy is a director of a not-for-profit organisation and has been Chair of the Board of the Australian Boys Choral Institute for over four years. He recently completed an Australian Institute of Company Directors course.
