As we recognise International Nurses Day on Sunday 12th (the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth) we celebrate all of our nurses at Alfred Health and the vital role they play in delivering quality healthcare to our communities.

One of our leaders in nursing is Anthony Cignarella, a Nurse Educator and Clinical Nurse Specialist in Intensive Care at The Alfred.

“Fostering the learning and development of a skilled nursing workforce is imperative to the future of Australian healthcare,” said Anthony. “As clinicians our priority is to provide evidenced based and compassionate care to patients and their families. As a Nurse Educator, we encourage and inspire knowledge.”

Gideon Johnson is one of The Alfred’s newest nursing recruits, having moved from Sydney to join the ICU’s team.

“I’m well supported and encouraged to advance my skills,” said Gideon. “I was seven years old when I first told my teacher that I wanted to study medicine. As I grew older, the passion to help people when they are most vulnerable became apparent to me. To me it is not just a job but a precious gift to humanity.”

Anthony also says not every patient’s journey ends with them going home, and his work also deals with the harder side of life.

“There is no greater privilege than to be able to provide another human being and their family with their final wishes and a dignified peaceful death.”
