New headspace service to open in March
A new headspace centre in Syndal will expand Alfred Health’s support for young people experiencing mental health challenges.
headspace Syndal is slated to open its doors in March 2021 and along with the Bentleigh and Elsternwick centres, will become the third headspace service operated by Alfred Health.
Alfred Health Child, Youth and headspace operations manager, Glenda Pedwell said the service was designed in partnership with young people so that they feel comfortable and free of stigma from first contact.
“Alfred Health is committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of young people, as well as supporting their families and networks,” she said.
“The absence of a headspace centre in the Monash area meant that many young people living, working and studying nearby, would have been unable to access appropriate services locally.
“This centre heralds a new era of locally available mental health and wellbeing services.”
headspace Syndal will enable young people aged 12 to 25 to access support for mental health, physical and sexual health, alcohol and other drugs, work and study.
Alfred Health also runs the specialist early psychosis program at a number of headspace centres in Melbourne’s south east suburbs, which focuses on early intervention, aiming to prevent disruptions in a young person’s life and lessen the duration of untreated psychosis.
The program provides young people and their families with psychiatry support, GP services, outreach services, after hours and crisis support, psycho education and more.
