Indigenous Garden opens

3 July 2023

The new Indigenous Garden at The Alfred has officially opened and is open to patients, visitors and staff.

The launch of the garden was held as part of National Reconciliation Week, with Boon Wurrung artist Caroline Martin, Indigenous cultural workshop facilitator and educator Jaeden Williams and Mala Creative Director Bob Barton in attendance.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer Simone Alexander said the garden’s development reflected Alfred Health’s ongoing commitment to building respectful partnerships with community.

"In order for us to continue our reconciliation journey, our aim is to continue to develop a shared sense of history and understanding of Aboriginal culture," Simone said.

"This co-design shows how we can meaningfully engage with community and plan for an inclusive and welcoming future for Alfred Health.  It is important we provide an inclusive and culturally safe environment for all."

Boon Wurrung artist Caroline Martin gave a Welcome to Country at the event; and spoke about the timber screen design featured in the garden, which continues the legacy of her ancestors through artwork.

Indigenous cultural workshop facilitator and educator Jaeden Williams performed a smoking ceremony to cleanse the area and people of negative energy, and promote the protection and wellbeing of visitors.

The garden is located between Main Ward Block and South Block at The Alfred, and is open to patients, visitors and staff.
