The Speech Pathology Department at The Alfred is part of the Alfred Health Speech Pathology Service which is an amalgamated department providing a service to The Alfred, Caulfield Hospital and Sandringham Hospital.
The department also has professional links with both the Port Phillip and Caulfield Community Rehabilitation, and the Caulfield Community Health Service.
As such, continuum of care between acute care, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and community services is maximized.
Speech pathologists are experts in the assessment, diagnosis and management of disorders of communication, swallowing and voice.
The Alfred Speech Pathology Department provides a service to all units within the hospital.
Inpatients and outpatients with a range of problems including disorders of swallowing, communication and voice may be referred.
At The Alfred, the focus is on acute care including diagnosis and early management of these disorder groups.

Speech Pathology Service Provision includes:
Speech and language assessments
Assessment and management of swallowing disorders including videofluoroscopy procedures (X-Ray of swallowing) and FEES (fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallow) assessments
Cognitive assessment and therapy
Individualised therapy programs to remediate communication disorders
Provision of alternative communication devices and strategies
Education and counselling to family and carers
Referral to other external agencies as appropriate
The Alfred Voice Clinic is conducted in conjunction with ENT staff on a fortnightly basis. This specialist clinic provides the assessment of voice disorders (via video-stroboscopy) and swallowing disorders (via fibre-optic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing). Recommendations are developed by the team following assessment. The clinic is available to inpatients and outpatients.
