For over 40 years, Alfred Nuclear Medicine has provided a wide range of nuclear medicine diagnostic and therapeutic services.
The department provides services for in-patients and out-patients from all departments within and outside The Alfred using the most up-to-date equipment and advanced technology, including positron emission tomography (PET).
Alfred Nuclear Medicine is staffed by a team of nuclear medicine physicians, nuclear medicine technologists, a cardiac technologist, clerical staff and a physicist.
The department is actively involved with training, education and research.
Alfred Nuclear Medicine is accredited for Nuclear Medicine and PET, and is approved for the training of both nuclear medicine physicians and technologists. All specialist medical staff are credentialed for PET.

Commonly performed procedures include: myocardial perfusion studies, gated cardiac blood pool scans, renal scans, bone scans, gastric emptying, lung scans, thyroid scans, PET scans (oncology only), and radio-iodine thyroid therapy.

Patients are requested to bring their Medicare card and all x-rays (film or CD) to the department.

Myocardial perfusion studies - no caffeine for 12 to 24 hours prior to the test (no coffee, tea, chocolate, or cola including herbal teas and decaffeinated drinks). Patients will be contacted by Nuclear Medicine to confirm the appointment time and to discuss all preparation.
For PET studies - fasting from midnight or 6 hours prior to test. Only water is allowed. All patients will be contacted by Nuclear Medicine with an appointment time and to discuss all preparation.

Studies are usually reviewed and reported within 1-2 hours of study completion and are then immediately available on The Alfred's Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and Powerchart system. Scan reports requiring urgent attention will be communicated by telephone with the ordering Doctor (please provide mobile phone no if available).
