Description of Service

The Clinical Haematology service offers a multi-disciplinary setting for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of the entire range of haematological disease.

Our comprehensive service includes -

  • non-malignant haematology
  • malignancy and stem cell transplantation
  • haemostasis/thrombosis
  • haemophilia

Allowing the effective delivery of both inpatient and outpatient care for blood disorders such as -

  • anaemia
  • acute and chronic leukaemia
  • myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative disorders
  • lymphoma
  • multiple myeloma.

The transfusion service at The Alfred provides support for a wide range of trauma and surgical procedures in close liaison with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service.

In addition we provide a consultative service to other specialties within The Alfred and to community based private practitioners.

The Malignant Haematology and Stem Cell Transplantation service operates within a collaborative care model incorporating the services of infectious diseases, radiation oncology, palliative care and allied health ensuring our patients benefit from a team based approach.

The haemopoietic stem cell transplantation service at the Alfred was established more than 25 years ago. Allogeneic stem cell transplants are performed using either family or unrelated donors in addition to autologous transplantation.

Patients are referred to us for treatment from numerous centres within Melbourne and regional Victoria.

The Ronald Sawers Haemophilia Centre and Thrombosis Clinic is a state-wide service and focuses on comprehensive care, providing a wide range of services to adults with bleeding and clotting disorders, including support for their families.

The Centre team liaise with and refer to a wide range of specialist services including orthopaedic, rheumatology, hepatitis, infectious diseases, pain management, psychiatry, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and genetic counselling. The haemophilia centre is accredited as an International Haemophilia Training Centre by the World Federation of Hemophilia.

Our patient centred approach to the delivery of care is further enhanced by an integrated haematology day care facility where chemotherapy may be delivered in an ambulatory setting in addition to blood product transfusion, central venous catheter management, growth factor/cytokine administration and other aspects of supportive care.

Our apheresis unit provides a comprehensive therapeutic and donor apheresis service for both inpatients and day patients.  Procedures performed include plasmapheresis, plateletpheresis, leucopheresis, granulocyte collection, and peripheral blood stem cell collection.

Research is a continuing and integral part of our work and we are actively involved in numerous international, national and ‘in-house' clinical trials.

The focus of this work is an extension of the pre-clinical laboratory research within the department and primarily explores novel anti-cancer therapies for malignant blood diseases such as leukaemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
