Model of Care and Design

A Model of Care is a framework that establishes how particular health care services will be delivered.

Traditionally, Victorian public hospitals like The Alfred have provided elective and emergency services together - on the same site and using the same specialists.

The Alfred Centre will adopt a new Model of Care, a key element of which will be the separation of day and short stay elective care from emergency care.

The Model of Care has formed the basis for all the planning elements of The Alfred Centre and has been instrumental in guiding every aspect of our project planning.

There are 10 key principles in our Model of Care:

  • Separates elective from emergency
  • Focuses on patients' journey
  • Provides ‘state of the art' technology
  • Provides a ‘one stop' approach to care
  • Takes a standardised approach to care
  • Plans & schedules care
  • Supports new skills & multi-skilling
  • Requires a major focus on Information Communication Technology
  • Supports a purpose-built facility
  • Includes GPs into episode of care

Design

The Model of Care has informed all design phases of The Alfred Centre project and significant design features are as follows:

  • Areas have been grouped and located with the patient's journey in mind. The emphasis has been on patient orientation and navigation
  • Floors have been generically designed to allow for flexibility and adaptability in the future
  • The calming atmosphere of the interior design inspires confidence and trust and promotes ‘wellness'
  • The layout promotes the use of inter-disciplinary teams and is designed to support effective work processes
  • The design incorporates linkways with the main Alfred Hospital to utilise site-wide support services
  • The design caters for future expansion both vertically and horizontally
