Description of Service

The Spinal Rehabilitation Unit offers a specialised interdisciplinary program for individuals with non-traumatic spinal conditions including multiple sclerosis, transverse myelitis, spinal cord ischaemia, cancer related spinal impairment, spinal infections and spina-bifida.

The service is available to patients 16 years and over.  There are no geographical boundaries for this service

The service offers:

  • Advice regarding prevention of complications
  • Skin and pressure care management
  • Specialised wheelchair and seating prescription
  • Spasticity management
  • Bowel and bladder management (including urodynamics)
  • Pain management
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Home assessments and advice regarding modifications
  • Prescription and provision of equipment to help improve independence
  • Computer assisted therapy
  • Worksite assessments where appropriate
  • Driver assessments
  • Adjustments to disability including counselling services
  • Referral to community agencies
  • Education of patients and families - including a detailed "Patient Information Folder"
  • Ongoing liaison with GPs and involved specialists
  • Interpreter services
