Description of Service

The Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit (CRU) provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitate patients who have experienced a cardiac event, heart failure or require risk factor modification.

The program provides a combination of supervised exercise, education and lifestyle management.

The CRU specialises in the management of patients with complex issues, the younger, fitter patients and those who require return to work assistance. 

The CRU also provides a comprehensive Heart Failure Rehabilitation program.

All patients are assessed at the Pre-Admission Clinic prior to commencing the program.

There are no geographical boundaries and there is no fee to attend. Interpreter services are utilised when necessary.

Different programs are available depending on patient requirements.

  • Program 1:

    • 3.5 hour program, 3 days per week for 6 weeks (total of 18 sessions).

    • Provides a combination of education on coronary artery disease, lifestyle management and supervised exercise.

    • Suitable for those who need to return to work; are younger or fitter; and who have the capacity to reach a high level of physical activity.

  • Program 2:

    • 3 hour program, 2 days per week for 6 weeks (total of 12 sessions).

    • Provides a combination of education on coronary artery disease, lifestyle management and supervised exercise.

    • Suitable for those who are older and who are able to reach a low-moderate level of physical activity.

  • Program 3:

    • 3 hour program, 1-2 days per week for 6 weeks.

    • Provides supervised exercise. 

    • Suitable for culturally and linguistically diverse patients (other than those who speak Russian, Greek or Italian); those who do not require education on coronary artery disease; or who have recently attended a cardiac rehabilitation program.

  • Heart Failure Rehabilitation Program:

    • 3 hour program, 2 days per week for 12 weeks.

    • This program provides supervised exercise, education sessions covering specific Heart Failure issues and a fortnightly Heart Failure Support Group

  • Program 6: 

    • 3 hour program, 2 days per week for 6 weeks (total of 12 sessions).

    • Provides a combination of education sessions on coronary artery disease utilising Russian, Greek or Italian interpreters and supervised exercise.

    • Suitable for those who require education sessions in these languages.

Outpatient Information
A written referral from a health professional is required. Patients entry into program is prioritised according to issues such as need to return to work.

Priority patients are generally assessed within 7-10 days from receiving referral.

Other patients are generally assessed within 2-4 weeks from receiving referral.
