Description of Service

The Alfred Health Radiation Oncology (AHRO) unit is a premier Radiation Therapy service in Melbourne. The Service provides treatment at two sites: the William Buckland Radiotherapy Centre, at the Alfred, in Melbourne: and at the Gippsland Cancer Care Centre, in Traralgon.

The centre's specialist medical staff provide expert advice for patients with malignant diseases (or for patients with benign disease that may be treated with radiation), and then - in conjunction with the professional radiation therapist treatment staff - administer any necessary courses of radiotherapy.

This includes both external beam treatment and brachytherapy treatment.

The AHRO has a close connection with the Medical Oncology unit at the Alfred, allowing convenient multi-modality treatment with combinations of radiation and chemotherapy, if indicated.

In addition, the close connection of the AHRO with other specialist surgical and medical units at the Alfred engenders the very best advice and care for patients requiring help from these units.

Outpatient Information
General outpatient clinics are held every weekday at the AHRO for new referrals and for followup. Appointments can be made by either phoning the department, but must be followed by a written referral, where possible attaching the results of relevant investigation results (such as biopsies or imaging).
