What is Clinical Governance?

Clinical Governance is a framework through which organisations are accountable for continuously improving the quality of their services and safeguarding high standards of care, by creating an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish.

NHS 1999

Clinical Governance emphasizes the importance of governing clinical safety and quality with the same rigor as applies to corporate governance.

The four guiding principles of effective clinical governance are to:

  • Build a culture of trust and honesty through open disclosure in partnership with consumers
  • Foster organisational commitment to continuous improvement
  • Establish rigorous systems to identify, monitor and respond to incidents
  • Evaluate and respond to key aspects of organisational performance
