Description of Service

The Alfred OtoNeurology Department provides a speciality service that excels in the assessment, diagnosis and management of disorders of the ear incorporating hearing impairment, balance disturbance and communication problems.

The department is equipped with state of the art technology and utilises the latest methodology to evaluate disorders of hearing and balance. All staff are fully qualified audiologists with years of experience in the field of diagnostic testing.

Staff work closely with other professionals such as Ear Nose & Throat Surgeons, Neurologists, Neurosurgeons and other disciplines to provide a comprehensive assessment and a high standard of patient care.

Tests available include:

Hearing -

  • Pure tone audiometry (Hearing test)
  • Impedance audiometry (Middle ear function test)
  • Speech Discrimination
  • Auditory Brainstem Response (Evoked Potential of the Auditory Nerve)
  • Cortical Evoked Response Audiometry

Balance Function Tests include -

  • Caloric
  • Rotational Chair Studies
  • Static Bias
  • Smooth Pursuit
  • Video-nystagmography & Hallpike & Gaze
  • Electrocochleography
  • Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential
  • Electroneurography (Facial Nerve test)

The majority of patients for assessment are seen as outpatients following a review by an Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon or a Neurologist.

The service plays a crucial role in evaluating Hyperbaric patients for suitability for Oxygen Therapy. Patients who are "at risk" for hearing loss, such as some Chemotherapy patients, are monitored by the department for changes to their hearing.

We seek to reduce the impact of hearing impairment through the provision of advice and information to patients, relatives and carers.

Our commitment to continuous quality improvement, professional development and participation in research initiatives ensures the ongoing provision of a high standard of patient centred care.
