The Alfred Orthotic Department provides a unique service to disabled and/or injured persons requiring an Orthosis which by definition is an external support and /or assistive device interfaced externally to the human body for the treatment of neuromuscular and musculoskeletal deficit secondary to disease, trauma or congenital disorders.
In August of 2000 The Orthotic Department was relocated to the new, purpose built facility on the fourth floor and named ‘The Seekers Orthotic and Prosthetic Department’ in recognition of the bands contribution to the Alfred. This new facility offers the latest technology in Orthotic treatment and ensures a safe environment for both patients and staff.
The Alfred Orthotic Department consists of four clinicians and one technician who are responsible for a clinical assessment and evaluation leading to the custom designing, development and fitting of an Orthosis.
The service plays a crucial role in the treatment of acute trauma patients at the Alfred and aims to assist in early stabilisation and mobilisation of these patients. In addition a comprehensive outpatient service is offered.
Orthotists have very close links to the surgical and medical units within the Alfred, including areas such as Trauma, Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery, Plastics and Rheumatology. Our expertise ranges from those requiring custom foot orthoses, custom spinal orthoses, knee braces (basically any Orthosis or Brace you may have encountered).
A strong alliance with universities, research facilities, other hospitals and suppliers has resulted in high quality products, knowledge and experience in all facets of Orthotics.
