Description of Service

Alfred Health is committed to responding to the needs of all Culturally, Linguistically and Religiously Diverse (CALD) consumers.

NAATI accredited interpreters are provided for CALD consumers;

  • who request an interpreter,
  • who prefer to speak a language other than English,
  • who are unable to have every day conversations in English,
  • who are able to have every day conversations but are not able to discuss clinical issues in English, and
  • when staff need an interpreter to ensure effective communication.

AUSLAN interpreters can be provided to all consumers who are Deaf or have a hearing impairment.

Telephone interpreters can be accessed for after-hours, emergencies, or if an on-site interpreter is unavailable.

Translated information can also be provided.

Other services include;

  • Staff education on how to respond to the needs of CALD consumers;
  • Multicultural and Interfaith intranet site and regular staff newsletter to inform staff of resources, training, services, and other information relevant to CALD consumers;
  • IT training on how to book an interpreter;
  • Consultation and advice.
